Getting around London during Wimbledon: our advice

Every year the Wimbledon Championships draw huge crowds to the area of the same name in south-west London, with a noticeable impact on surrounding traffic for almost two weeks, particularly around the All England Club at the start and end of the day.

For visitors staying in Mayfair, Knightsbridge or Chelsea, the journey to Wimbledon can take much longer than usual at the tournament's busiest times, especially for the most popular sessions. A chauffeur who knows the alternative routes of south-west London can avoid the most congested roads around the grounds.

The Congestion Charge and the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) remain in force throughout the tournament: a vehicle that complies with these rules avoids any unnecessary detour or penalty, something our chauffeurs always factor in when preparing the journey.

For transfers from Heathrow, closer to Wimbledon than the other London airports, the journey is generally quicker than from Gatwick or London City, worth considering for visitors arriving on the day of their session at the tournament.

Finally, hiring a chauffeur by the day is particularly well suited to this period: you can combine a return trip to Wimbledon with other plans during the day, shopping in Knightsbridge or lunch in Chelsea, without making several separate bookings or depending on a vehicle being available when you leave the tournament.

Preparing a transfer to Wimbledon from your hotel

To book a private chauffeur to Wimbledon, start by distinguishing the time the grounds open, the time of your meeting and the start of the match you want to see. These three times are not the same. Add to the road journey the time needed to get out of the vehicle, reach your entrance and go through security. The hotel name, its full address and the entrance shown on your ticket are a better basis for planning than a simple request to be dropped off at Wimbledon.

Also say whether the group is leaving from several hotels. Gathering travellers at a single address can simplify departure, while a round of pick-ups must be included in the request to be studied. For a trip with friends or a business trip, give a reachable contact for each group. If the programme changes, the person coordinating the passengers can then pass on a new departure time without multiplying contradictory instructions.

Choosing the vehicle and organising the luggage

Choose the vehicle according to the actual number of travellers and what they are carrying, rather than its name alone. Mention children, the seats needed, suitcases and bulky items when booking. If you are arriving straight from the airport, confirm where the luggage can be left before the tournament. A transfer vehicle should not be considered a left-luggage service available all day, unless this has been expressly agreed.

For a departure from Heathrow, Gatwick or London City, give the flight number and the terminal when known. Landing time is not the moment you will be ready to get into the car: formalities and baggage reclaim come afterwards. If your tennis ticket imposes a firm constraint, explain it in your request. The team can then study a realistic programme instead of treating an airport transfer and a trip to the grounds separately.

Planning the return without depending on the end of a match

The length of a match can change the time you leave. A return trip at a fixed time suits a predictable programme; an hourly booking meets a different need and must be priced for a defined duration. Before booking, ask how to report a delay and what conditions apply to waiting. Describe your other plans for the evening so that a dinner in Mayfair or a train departure is not forgotten in the schedule.

The meeting point for the return may differ from the drop-off point. Traffic, queues of visitors and the organiser's instructions can prevent a vehicle from waiting near the entrance. Agree on a precise address and a means of contact rather than a promise of parking in front of the grounds. Check the transport information published by Wimbledon for the edition concerned and the access conditions before you leave, particularly if a passenger needs an accessible route.

What to send us for a clear quote

A complete request includes the date, the addresses, the preferred times, the passengers, the luggage and the type of service. Say whether you only want the hotel to Wimbledon transfer, a return trip or several hours with a chauffeur. For a business trip, add the company name and the contact details of the person receiving the confirmation. Intermediate stops must be mentioned before confirmation so that the price and duration match the service expected.

Keep your booking reference and let the team know if your hotel, your flight or the make-up of the group changes. A last-minute request requires an availability check; it does not remove the need to provide the journey details. If departure is very soon, use the priority line shown in the form while you finish your request. This approach helps prepare a transfer to Wimbledon that fits your stay, without promising to remove the traffic constraints of the tournament.
