Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez

Late September / early October · 25 September to 3 October 2027

French Riviera

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez bring together nearly 250 boats every year, from classic yachts to modern Maxi Yachts, for one of the most beautiful regattas in the Mediterranean, with particularly strained road access to Saint-Tropez.

For about nine days at the end of September and the beginning of October, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez becomes the stage for regattas between classic yachts, often a century old and meticulously restored, and modern racing yachts of the Maxi Yacht class, in a unique setting that has made this event one of the most photogenic and most followed regattas in the Mediterranean since it began in 1981 as the Nioulargue.

The Village des Voiles, set up on the harbour in Saint-Tropez for the whole event, is open to the public free of charge every day, attracting crowds of visitors who come to admire the boats at their moorings, watch the starts from the quays and enjoy the special atmosphere the event gives the town, combining sailing tradition, the Mediterranean art of living and a society gathering.

Saint-Tropez, already known to be hard to reach in high summer because of its single main access road, the D98A, which winds from Sainte-Maxime and Grimaud, sees this structural constraint worsen noticeably during the event: vehicles converge on the peninsula from Cannes, Nice, Marseille and beyond, regularly saturating this single road, particularly on Friday late afternoons and at weekends, when the journey can take several hours instead of about forty minutes in normal conditions.

This very particular geography, with Saint-Tropez at the tip of a peninsula with no serious alternative road, makes the helicopter a particularly relevant way to reach the town from Nice or Cannes during Les Voiles, with a flight time of just 15 to 20 minutes compared with potentially several hours by road at busy times, a difference that becomes decisive if you do not want to miss a race start or an evening dinner.

The event's visitors are particularly varied: professional crews racing in the regattas, families of skippers and owners of participating boats, but also a wide audience of sailing enthusiasts and Riviera visitors who simply come to watch the spectacle from the harbour's restaurant terraces or the nearby beaches, each with very different transport needs, from a simple one-off transfer to chauffeur hire for all nine days of the event.

The special atmosphere of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, at the crossroads of top-level sailing and Saint-Tropez society life, also generates many dinners and private parties in the harbour's iconic restaurants and the surrounding villas, with frequent journeys at the end of the day between the Village des Voiles, restaurants and accommodation, often located outside the dense centre of Saint-Tropez.

The different classes of boats competing, from elegant classic yachts sometimes built before the First World War to modern Maxi Yachts several dozen metres long built for pure performance, race on different courses according to their category, which creates a varied visual spectacle throughout the day from the harbour terraces and nearby beaches, contributing greatly to the regatta's international fame beyond sailing enthusiasts.

Every year the regatta mobilises several hundred volunteers and sailing professionals to ensure safety on the courses at sea, a considerable logistical operation that shows how much the event has grown since its modest beginnings in 1981, initially conceived as a friendly meeting between owners of classic yachts before becoming the international event it is today.

Sailing conditions in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez at this time of year, generally more stable than in midsummer with regular thermal winds, also contribute to the regatta's sporting success, offering crews favourable conditions for top-level competition while guaranteeing a quality spectacle for the many spectators gathered along the coast.

Accommodation in the region, whether the grand hotels in the town centre, the villas of Ramatuelle and Gassin in the immediate hinterland, or the residences along the beach road towards Pampelonne, is almost fully booked throughout the event, with visitors frequently organising daily journeys between their often outlying accommodation and the heart of the action around the harbour and the Village des Voiles.

Les Voiles also coincide with a still mild late season on the Riviera, which encourages many visitors to extend their stay beyond the regatta to enjoy the beaches and the peninsula's autumn mildness, a trend that spreads demand for transport over a longer period than the official race days alone.

During this period, LimoAirportGroup organises regular helicopter rotations to Saint-Tropez and chauffeur transfers designed to anticipate the foreseeable saturation of the access road, with slots to be booked as a priority for the busiest race days, generally the weekends and the days with favourable weather, which draw most of the spectators.

Practical tips

How to organise your transport for this event

  • 1Choose the helicopter on Fridays and at weekends, when the D98A is most saturated and the road journey can take several hours instead of forty minutes.
  • 2As the Village des Voiles is free and open to the public, expect large crowds on foot in central Saint-Tropez during race times, particularly late morning and early afternoon.
  • 3For a stay of several days, chauffeur hire avoids repeated trips along the peninsula's single access road.
  • 4Book your transport several weeks in advance, as this period coincides with the end of the summer season on the Riviera and strong remaining holiday demand.
  • 5For dinners and private parties outside the town centre, plan for a chauffeur on standby, as accommodation is often far from the harbour.
