Mid-June · June 2027 (a Saturday, date to be confirmed)
The military parade that celebrates the British sovereign's official birthday every year draws several hundred thousand spectators along The Mall and around Buckingham Palace, for one of the most crowded ceremonial events in the London calendar.
Trooping the Colour continues a British military tradition dating back to the eighteenth century, originally intended to let soldiers recognise their regiment's colours in battle. Now the ceremony for the sovereign's official birthday, the parade brings together more than fourteen hundred soldiers, more than two hundred horses and more than four hundred musicians every year in a carefully choreographed parade between Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horse Guards Parade. The 2027 edition will be held on a Saturday in June, as tradition dictates (official date to be confirmed).
The parade route, which leaves Buckingham Palace, runs along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade and then returns to the palace for the traditional Royal Air Force flypast watched from the balcony, concentrates all the crowds on a single route of less than two kilometres, where the best spots are taken from dawn even though most of the route is free to access.
The London authorities close the whole area to traffic from the early hours of the morning, from The Mall to Whitehall via Horse Guards Road, a closure that lasts several hours and completely changes the usual traffic routes throughout central Westminster for the whole day.
This road closure, combined with the considerable crowds converging on the same small area, makes Westminster practically impassable by car for the whole morning and early afternoon, a major logistical challenge for anyone who needs to travel in central London that day, whether or not they are attending the ceremony.
For guests staying in hotels in Mayfair, Knightsbridge or Belgravia who simply want to enjoy the ceremony from a privileged viewpoint, often booked in a private club or on a high floor overlooking The Mall, the question of transport is less about getting to the event than about leaving central London once the ceremony is over, when traffic restrictions are lifted gradually and unevenly and demand for taxis soars at the same time in a very small area.
LimoAirportGroup always advises its clients in London for Trooping the Colour to plan any journey in the city centre that day well in advance, and offers a chauffeur positioned beforehand outside the closure area for a quick pick-up as soon as the restrictions are lifted, a far more reliable arrangement than a last-minute booking in the heart of Westminster.
Plan your transport for this event: book online or request a quote, depending on the service.
