Val d'Isère and the Espace Killy

Together with Tignes, Val d'Isère forms the Espace Killy ski area: 300 kilometres of runs between 1,550 and 3,450 metres, a ski area separate from the Three Valleys and not linked to Courchevel on skis.

Val d'Isère remains one of the most renowned resorts in the world, having hosted the men's alpine events of the 1992 Winter Olympics and the 2009 Alpine World Ski Championships, and every year the venue for the Critérium de la Première Neige, a historic men's World Cup race held on the Face de Bellevarde.

The resort is also the home of Jean-Claude Killy, triple Olympic champion in 1968, who gave his name to the ski area, and it attracts an international clientele of experienced skiers seeking off-piste terrain and big faces.

The village has kept a historic stone-and-timber centre around its church, very lively in the evening, which contrasts with the more recent character of many Tarentaise resorts.

In winter, the village comes alive from late afternoon, when skiers come down to the bars and restaurants in the centre.

About an hour and a half by road

The journey between Courchevel and Val d'Isère is made by road, covering about 75 kilometres and usually taking 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic and snow, through several Tarentaise valleys.

The final stretch climbs the upper Tarentaise from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, passes below the Tignes dam and then runs alongside Lac du Chevril before reaching the village: a high-mountain section where conditions can change within minutes.

After heavy snowfall, this last section may require special equipment or slower traffic; your chauffeur sets off with enough time in hand to drop you on time, even on a busy changeover Saturday.

For very early starts, your chauffeur can collect you before dawn so you arrive as the lifts open, an option popular with those who want first tracks.

On the way back, you can stop in Bourg-Saint-Maurice or Moûtiers if you wish.

A day in Val d'Isère from Courchevel

Many skiers staying in Courchevel spend one day of their week discovering the Espace Killy: an early start, a day on the slopes of Val d'Isère and Tignes, then back in the late afternoon or after dinner in the village.

A chauffeur for the full day is the most comfortable option for this: the chauffeur stays on site, keeps your change of clothes in the vehicle and sets off as soon as you are ready, with no fixed schedule.

Every December, the Critérium de la Première Neige draws large crowds to the Face de Bellevarde; book your vehicle several weeks ahead if you want to attend.

The price of a one-way trip or a full day is shown in the booking module before you confirm.

If you are staying in Val d'Isère and would like to spend a day in Courchevel, the same service works the other way round, with an early-morning pick-up outside your hotel and a return after dinner.
