For the fourteenth year in a row, the Ski Cross World Cup Tour stops at the Jean-Frédéric Chapuis stadium in Val Thorens, one of the most demanding courses on the world circuit.
Ski cross pits four skiers against each other at the same time on a technical course combining jumps, banked turns and fast sections, a spectacular discipline to watch from the side of the piste. Val Thorens has hosted this World Cup stage every year for more than a decade, organised by the resort's sports club.
The event takes place over two days, with qualifiers and finals bringing together the world's best in the discipline. The Jean-Frédéric Chapuis stadium, named after the Olympic champion from the region, can be reached directly from the resort's snow front.
Unlike slalom or downhill, ski cross is mostly watched from the side of the course rather than from a single grandstand: spectators spread out along the course, by the most spectacular jumps and banked turns, which makes the event particularly lively to follow on site.
This stage is part of a very busy World Cup calendar in the Tarentaise in December, notably between Val Thorens and Val d'Isère, which turns much of the month into an unmissable occasion for fans of top-level alpine skiing.
Many spectators use their stay in Val Thorens for this stage to combine the two race days (Thursday and Friday) with skiing at the weekend, as the Three Valleys ski area remains fully open and accessible throughout the event.
